Help us get copies of this important book in every school and community library in the US!
Do it now, for your children, your family, your school and your community!
Dear Friends,
How often has someone implied that, because your family was formed via adoption, you’re not a “real” mom? Or because you aren’t your child’s biological father, you are somehow a ‘second best’ dad?
How often do you get comments from perfect strangers about the makeup of your family? What about intrusive questions from well-meaning friends and family members?
How do you respond to your child when she wonders why the other kids tell her she’s “different” — or tease her about her family make-up or the way she looks?
Do you sometimes despair that others will ever understand that adoption is simply another way of joining a family — AND NOT TREAT YOUR FAMILY AS SOMEHOW SECOND-BEST?
Do you ever feel that maybe love isn‘t always enough ... that it can‘t overcome all obstacles, much as you hoped it would?
AND WHAT ABOUT RACIAL AND ETHNIC BIAS?
What can we do to prepare our children for this inevitable occurrence? How do we respond when many of us have never experienced the type of discrimination our children will?
Wouldn‘t it be great if there were an easy solution to all of this.... an easy way to start a dialogue that would educate others in a non-threatening way?
I want to tell you what you can do about it TODAY FOR YOUR CHILDREN AND FOR YOUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY!
INSIST THAT YOUR SCHOOL AND YOUR COMMUNITY LIBRARY BOTH HAVE COPIES OF FAMILIES ARE FOREVER.

Celebrate International Forever Family Day on September 24th by showing your support for your family — especially your children — that you are PROUD of them and that you will take action to insure that EVERYONE respects and accepts all families — no matter how they were formed.
There is no better way to honor your family, especially your children, than to do something that will help put families —all families —on equal footing! Best of all, it’s AFFORDABLE and EASY!
www.simpleasthat.com/go/amazon
That’s right!
An important piece of the solution is right here.
www.simpleasthat.com/go/amazon
It‘s an award-winning children‘s picture book, Families Are Forever, the story about a little girl born in China who was adopted by American woman.

My name is Deb Capone and I‘ve been there, too. My beautiful daughter joined me through international adoption. Just like you, I learned that love isn‘t always enough. That children need real answers—and responses—to questions that can hurt. I also learned that not everyone has the language to answer these questions, but Families Are Forever does!
I wrote Families Are Forever to do three things:
Imagine my delight when I discovered that parents and teachers found Families Are Forever to be a wonderful tool — not only for discussing adoption and family formation — but for engaging in broader conversations about acceptance of all people!
As parents — or any one of the over 50 million Americans touched by adoption — we are far from alone. In fact, we‘ve got plenty of company. Do a Google search of "adoption," and you‘ll find more than 47 million sites to choose from—up 2 million sites from just two months ago!
And if that’s not enough, consider the following:
* There are 1.5 million adopted children in the U.S. — more than two percent of all children — according to US Census: Current Population Report.
* More than six million Americans are adopted
* More than 50 million Americans — nearly two-thirds of the population — are affected by adoption.
* Americans are increasingly positive about adoption
* International adoption more than doubled over the past decade
* Adoption is a $1.4 billion dollar business (Marketdata Enterprises, 2000)
But despite these statistics, the truth about family formation remains shrouded in secrecy, shame and hurtful stereotypes. For example, were you aware that children of adoption are the only group of US citizens who do not have access to their birth records? All stereotypes harm all children and chip away at self-esteem every day.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO SOMETHING TO REVERSE THESE NEGATIVE BIASES AND LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR ALL FAMILIES! AND WE CAN START TODAY!
Get your copies of Families are Forever — plus wonderful bonus gifts — and share the true meaning of ‘family’ with your friends, family, schools and communities.

There‘s no question about it: we‘re living in an increasingly complex world. Our job as parents is to advocate for our children. To spread truth about family formation as far as we can — into our homes, schools, libraries, and communities — so that our children will be accepted and respected for who they are. So they won‘t have to explain or defend how their families were formed. Or be hurt by another person‘s ignorance or insensitivity.
And we know that this goes beyond family formation, since many of our children also face racial bias.
Children of color, children who are adopted, and children who are considered "different" share the same hopes and desires that all children have: acceptance within the family, at school, and in society as a whole.
Let‘s be clear: if your children are people of color, the number of children who share their ethnic and racial makeup is increasing at an amazing pace, a fact that has commanded the attention of everyone concerned with children‘s well-being.
Cultural, ethnic and racial diversity is a prominent topic in the United States. According to American Demographics, “Diversity is on the verge of an explosion in America’s grade schools. The demographics of American schools are dramatically changing, more so than any other time in American history."
In fact, even if adults could segregate themselves, our children are facing a myriad of cultures, choices and ‘abilities’ on a daily basis. As the National Association of Education of Young Children reports, children’s natural curiosity will lead them to ask questions: "Why is her skin so dark?" "Why does he speak funny?" “Why doesn’t she look like her Mommy?”
Adam Pertman, the Executive Director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, noted in January 2003 that “one adopted Chinese girl in a school changes the way that school teaches about family formation.”
Yes, the world is changing and your children will likely face biases that we never dreamed of, just because of how they look or how their families were formed.
Incredible? Yes.
Infuriating? You bet.
BUT WE ARE NOT POWERLESS!
We can allow the status quo to remain as it‘s always been, or we can join together and take the first steps toward creating a better world for our children, a world where they will be judged for who they are as people — not for the color of their skin or for the choices we parents made about how to form our families.

Even as parents and educators struggle with this issue, there‘s a book that‘s having amazing impact across America and around the world.
A book that beautifully illustrates that different is simply different — not better or worse, right or wrong. A book that offers a loving way for children to see themselves. It is also a gentle way to discuss issues of multi-culturalism.
That book is Families Are Forever, a story about a little girl born in China who joins her American mom via adoption. Not only does it present a reassuring way to talk to ALL children about adoption, it also addresses issues such as multi-culturalism, single-parent families, and the idea that different is simply different.

"Our eyes were different, but we could both see.
Our lips were different, but we could both smile."

Finding the delicate balance between individuality and diversity, Families follows one girl‘s heartwarming, fascinating journey from China to America — into the arms and life of a loving mom and her extended family. The book is the first installment in a new ongoing children‘s book series addressing issues of adoption and multi-racial family life.
IT’S TRUE!
IN THE TIME IT TAKES TO READ A PICTURE BOOK YOU CAN INCREASE A CHILD’S SELF-ESTEEM AND ESTABLISH GREAT ROLE MODELS AND IDEAS. IDEAS THAT ENCOURAGE CHILDREN TO VALUE THEIR DIFFERENCES AND CELEBRATE THEIR SIMILARITIES TO OTHERS!
Now, I know you must be thinking: how can a child‘s picture book do all that?
Well, it’s been happening for generations!
Books are a very powerful medium. Children learn from fairy tales, fables, storybooks and oral traditions — everything from ancient mythology to Dr. Seuss and other friends. Thus little girls, like Cinderella, wait for their prince to come and make their life wonderful. Boys want to go off and slay giants, much like Jack and the Beanstalk or larger-than-life heroes in Greek and Roman mythology. Books are a proven way to influence a child‘s worldview and ideas about place within society. They also help children form concepts of right and wrong, as well as raise awareness of societal issues.
Wonder how effective a new storybook can be for today‘s children? Here‘s what two professionals said about Families Are Forever:
"Your messages of acceptance and respect for all cultures and choices are critical for all children. But parents and teachers sometimes struggle to communicate these themes in a way that is straightforward and entertaining. That is where Families Are Forever comes in—it provides positive and empowering role models and a jumping-off point for kids and adults to create a great dialogue."
Dr. Jane Aronson, Executive Director International Pediatric Health Services, New York, New York
Adam Pertman, author of the critically acclaimed book Adoption Nation, states: Families are Forever delights on so many levels. It‘s a book for children who were adopted, to be sure, but it‘s also for everyone who wants to better understand (and teach children about) the extraordinary changes taking place in families all around us. Most of all, it‘s about love and belonging — which makes it a book for everyone."
Families Are Forever could be one of the most important children’s books you ever buy! You will encourage your children to understand their place within the family and to celebrate what we all share. Teaching your children to navigate in a diverse world — to respect themselves and others — is arguably one of the most important lessons you can teach them.
"When my daughter introduced me to her new friend, she never mentioned that she was handicapped... by reading about Rain, she had words to express what she knew already—that her friend was her friend first and her handicap meant only that they had to play some games a bit differently!"
Nona O’Connell, Sea Cliff, NY
Families Are Forever uses PROVEN methods for helping parents broach difficult subjects in a positive and kid-friendly way. It:
* Helps children understand that different is just different.
* Gives children a look at family formation options that may be different from their own.
* Helps children understand that being adopted does not affect their value.
* Provides an excellent starting point for other conversations about race, culture, choices and individual abilities.
* Helps children understand how much they are loved and wanted — regardless of how their family was formed or its structure.
* Helps parents and educators discuss, matter-of-factly, that adoption — and all means of family formation (step-families, single-sex parent families, and grandparent-led families) — are all as legitimate as biological birth when it comes to forming a family.

Thank you for your support.
With respect and gratitude,
